UFC megastar Conor McGregor is taking over the big screen.
McGregor, who last fought in 2021, will star alongside actor Jake Gyllenhaal in Amazon Prime’s remake of the 1989 action film “Road House,” by Deadline.
The film marks the first motion picture credit for the controversial fighter. According to the outlet, McGregor’s role has not been revealed but he will portray an original character in the film rather than playing himself.
“Conor McGregor is thrilled to extend his illustrious career to Hollywood and join Jake Gyllenhaal in this reimagining of the beloved classic ‘Road House,'” said McGregor spokeswoman Karen J. Kessler said in a statement.
“While the fight remains his main focus, this is the start of another successful venture in the McGregor empire. He is eager to start filming.”
Son of Gregor His appearance teased Wednesday in a social media post. Amazon Studios will begin production in the Dominican Republic in late August and release the film on Prime Video.
No release date has been set.
In the original “Road House,” Patrick Swayze starred as “Dalton,” a bouncer in a small-town Missouri bar. The reimagined version of the cult classic will feature Gyllenhaal in a role similar to Swayze’s as a former UFC fighter based in the Florida Keys.
McGregor has not stepped inside the octagon since last July, when he suffered multiple stress fractures in his left leg during a loss to Dustin Poirier at UFC 264.
Although he still intends to compete, the 34-year-old’s foray into the film industry is the Irishman’s latest venture outside of the UFC.
The former UFC champion has previously entertained to appear on the silver screen. In 2016, McGregor was rumored to appear in the Vin Diesel-directed film xXx: The Return of Xander Cage, but support from the project.
In 2021, McGregor was the highest paid athlete in the world, earning around $208M – around $180M came from endorsements, according to Sportico. It sold the most in its No. 1 whiskey brand. 12 Worth about $600 million, according to ESPN.
It has since fallen among the the best athletes in the world but he remains the highest paid UFC fighter, collecting an estimated $52M in 2022.
