2022 midterm main ends in Arizona, Missouri, Kansas, Michigan and Washington

Votes were cast on Tuesday in five statesincluding some that were battlegrounds in 2020 — and will be again in 2024. Kansas voters voted to preserve access to abortion on Tuesday night, as abortion faced its first test at the ballot box since The Supreme Court struck down Roe v. Wade down.

With former President Donald Trump’s influence coming to the fore in some of the primary schools on Tuesday, a CBS News poll released Trump’s endorsement of Republicans on Tuesday showed a boon for that candidate, and even more so among Republicans who say they “always” vote in Republican primaries, most of whom identify as MAGA Republicans.

In Arizona, Trump has rallied for his allies in the races for Senate, governor and secretary of state. Arizona was one of the main battleground states that went to President Biden in 2020. After the election, some Republicans in the state tried to overturn the results, with a plan to send a slate of phony alternative voters who supported Trump to Congress of the Electors. College certification, other than the electorate Mr. Biden won.

In the Republican primary that took on Democratic Senator Mark Kelly in November, Trump endorsed Blake Masters, who had a comfortable lead according to two polls ahead of the primary. CBS News projects Masters will win their race and advance to face Kelly.

For governor, former TV news anchor Kari Lake and lawyer Karrin Taylor Robson were in a tight race for the GOP nomination that repeats the dynamic between Trump and former Vice President Mike Pence: Trump supported Lake, while Pence, along with a limited term sitting. CBS News projects Bowers’ opponent David Farnsworth to beat Bowers, with Farnsworth leading Wednesday morning.

Days before the primary school, the Arizona’s GOP vote formally criticism Bowers for his testimony, a result of the frustrations of many members of the right when Bowers in the past refused to support efforts with the support of Trump to cancel the 2020 election.

This year, Bowers helped block a bill, introduced by secretary of state candidate and current state Rep. Shawnna Bolick, to power the legislature to choose its own electors, regardless of how the people voted. Because of his actions, the former president railed against him, calling the Speaker “RINO coward.”

CBS News projects that Attorney General Eric Schmitt, who is leading the crowded field, will win the Republican nomination for the open Senate seat in Missouri. Eric Greitens, the former governor who resigned in 2018 and faced allegations of domestic abuse, led early in the race, but an $11 million ad blitz from two anti-Greitens groups ended with him.

On the eve of the primary, Trump issued a kind of split endorsement in the race, throwing his support behind “ERIC.” Eric Schmitt and Eric Greiten quickly claimed they had won his support.

In Missouri’s 1st Congressional District, CBS News projects incumbent Cori Bush, a longtime incumbent in 2020, to win the primary.

Meanwhile, three of the 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump are facing primary challengers who have Trump’s support. Trump posted Tuesday on Truth Social to urge Republican voters to “knock out impeachment slime.”

In Michigan, CBS News’ John Gibbs projects that incumbent Speaker Peter Meijer is one of the 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump. Trump supported Gibbs in the primary, and Gibbs will now face Democratic nominee Hillary Scholten in the general election.

In a statement early Wednesday, Meijer said he is “proud that he stayed true to my principles, even when it came at a significant political cost.”

In the race to take on Governor Gretchen Whitmer, CBS News anchor Tudor Dixon won the Republican nomination. Dixon, backed by Trump, was seen by Republican strategists as the strongest candidate to take on Whitmer. Among the Republicans who defeated Dixon was Ryan Kelley, who was arrested in June in connection with his participation in the January 6 attack on the US Capitol.

“Now we have the opportunity to truly hold Gretchen Whitmer accountable for the pain she has caused all of us over the past three years,” Dixon said at her election night watch party in Grand Rapids, Mich., referring to the lockdowns were imposed. during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In Washington, the top two vote-getters will advance to the general election regardless of party affiliation. Republican Reps. Jaime Herrera Beutler in the 3rd District and Dan Newhouse in the 4th District are at risk of being shut out by Trump-backed challengers.
